WhatsApp testing new ‘Status’ tab; lets you share photos like Instagram ‘Stories’ or Snapchat ‘Snaps’

WhatsApp is currently testing new interface with ‘Status’ updates tab to the interface after adding a ‘Camera’ tab to the interface along with Video Calling. ‘Status’ updates is not a new addition to WhatsApp and has long existed with the launch of WhatsApp in 2009. But this new addition will introduce sharing images with your contacts for a limited period, just like ‘Stories’ in Instagram and ‘Snaps’ in Snapchat.

The new hidden WhatsApp ‘Status’ feature in latest Android Beta

On checking the new user interface, the new ‘Status’ tab will co-exist with the old ‘Status’ section in the Settings Menu. Facebook, the owner of WhatsApp, seems to have introduced the ‘Snaps’ like functionality in all its products, right from Facebook Messenger’s ‘Messenger Day‘ to Instagram’s ‘Instagram Stories‘ to the new ‘Status’ tab in WhatsApp. Earlier the company introduced a Camera Tab to click photographs or record videos and send them to multiple people without leaving WhatsApp or going to individual chat and using the camera icon to the ‘Type a message’ area.
Camera Interface to add a new ‘new’ WhatsApp ‘Status’

Currently, the functionality is only available as a hidden feature in the latest WhatsApp public beta for Android and iOS. You will need a rooted Android or a Jailbroken iOS device to enable the hidden functionality. WhatsApp is testing the feature and feedback to implement the UI changes for a wider rollout down the line. One thing to note is that there is no direct way to delete the ‘Status’ images or videos shared in the ‘Status’ tab.

There are no options to set the timing of the image or video except the app asks you to set ‘Status recipients’ at the beginning. After the initial setup, you can change the recipients of the status using the three dot menu on the top right corner of the app when in the ‘Status’ tab. You can add a new status using the add ‘New Status’ tab on the top right options in the ‘Status’ tab. After clicking the photo or recording the video, you will be presented with a preview screen where you can crop the video or add emoji’s, text overlays, and scribble using the pencil tool on the image or video.

WhatsApp New Status section along with the old (existing) status section

Facebook is pushing to counter the popularity of Snapchat by replicating the functionality of ‘Snapchats.’ In the limited testing of Instagram ‘Stories,’ the main issue with the implementation is the number of people that are sharing the images, depending in thousands on the number of people that you are following. There is no easy way to manage the long horizontal scroll list of ‘Stories.’

The US Must End Ban On India's Rockets. Especially The PSLV.

\

Like other big contractors, American space companies have long expected some friendly support from their government. And Uncle Sam has usually been more than happy to help. Sometimes, though, government help causes more harm than good.

Since 2005, U.S. satellite manufacturers have been prohibited from hiring India's space agency to launch their equipment. Private American launch companies, such as SpaceX, are quite happy with this arrangement, which was intended to protect them. But the ban is not only wrong in principle -- it's actually impeding an exciting new American industry.

Last month, under pressure from satellite operators and manufacturers, U.S. trade officials began reviewing the decade-old policy. They should heed the pressure and overturn it.

Emerging India may seem like an unlikely competitor for Silicon Valley rocket companies. Yet since 1969, the Indian Space Research Organization has consistently punched above its modest weight class, racking up a series of cheap and practical achievements. One of its most important feats was the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, which was designed to carry satellites for monitoring agriculture and water resources, among other things. What made the PSLV unique was that it was designed to launch small satellites. And that's a good niche to occupy at the moment.

Over the past few years, the small-satellite market has boomed as advances in miniaturization made space accessible to governments and companies that might never have considered it. The uses for such gear seem almost limitless, from shoebox-sized climate-monitoring devices to Samsung's plan to use thousands of micro-satellites to provide global internet access. Some $2.5 billion has been invested in the industry over the past decade.

But getting all those satellites into space is now proving to be a problem, and U.S. policy is partly to blame.

In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan's administration sought to protect nascent private launch companies from subsidized foreign competition by setting up Commercial Space Launch Agreements. The idea was simple: In exchange for the chance to put U.S. satellites into space, foreign governments agreed to launch quotas and set fees. Both China and Russia signed such agreements. In 2005, India was asked to do the same. While the U.S. waited for an answer (it was and continues to be "no"), it imposed an export moratorium on satellites for Indian launch.

The timing was no accident. In 2005, SpaceX was building its Falcon 1 rocket, which was designed to carry small satellites. The ban even came to be known as the "SpaceX Agreement." Problematically, though, the Falcon 1 had only one commercial launch before it was retired in 2009. At the time, the small satellite boom hadn't yet taken off, and SpaceX didn't believe there was a commercial justification for the rocket. (It's now scrambling to correct that mistake.)

Since then, no other U.S. company has offered a rocket for small satellite launches (though some are reportedly in the works), even as demand has surged. That leaves American satellite companies with few options. The U.S. Trade Representative has handed out occasional waivers from the moratorium. And a European government consortium now offers its own small satellite launch vehicle, for a hefty fee. But a far cheaper and more reliable option -- going to India -- remains off the table.

That's only hurting American companies, while sending the wrong message to India. Civilian space cooperation would benefit the economies of both countries, and restraining it to protect American companies -- which have had 10 years to come up with a competitive product -- can't be justified from a business or diplomatic standpoint. If the U.S. government wants to help its space companies shoot for the stars, it should stop shooting itself in the foot.

3 Ways Vitamin C Can Help You Look Younger

As we age, we lose the natural vitamin C in our skin. Luckily, lemons contain the vitamin C we need to look and feel fresh again.

Unlocking the vitamin C in lemons can help turn back the clock in three ways:

1. Age Spots

The best way to use vitamin C on your age spots is lemon juice. The citric acid in lemon juice can help gradually fade the spots and help even your skin tone.
It's simple: Dab lemon juice onto your age spots daily. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes and say good-bye to unwanted spots.

2. Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Wrinkles form on the parts of your face that move the most. Underneath your top layer of skin, you have collagen – a connecting tissue that keeps your skin layers together. As you get older, you start to lose some collagen, which causes the skin to sink and create wrinkles. To fight wrinkles, try adding a healthy dose of vitamin C into your diet.
Eat foods rich in vitamin C: lemons, strawberries, papaya and pineapple. With the help of these delicious snacks, your body will create more collagen, helping to prevent pesky wrinkles.

3. Sagging Skin

Using vitamin C on your skin helps boost your collagen, which will bring elasticity back to your skin and can prevent sagging in as little as two weeks.
You can do it yourself: Mix some lemon juice into your moisturizer or look for a moisturizer made with vitmain C. Apply once a day in the morning and you're done.

5 Habits That Can Make You Look Older Than You Are

We have yet to discover the fountain of youth, but we do know the rate at which we age – and the way we look as we age – depends heavily on lifestyle. Making small changes to your everyday routine can reap benefits like fewer wrinkles, less inflammation and clearer skin. Ditch these five lifestyle pitfalls to add years to your life and take years off your face.

Smoking

1. Smoking

It’s no secret that smoking is bad for your health – and can lead to emphysema, heart disease and many types of cancer – but did you know it affects how you look, too? “Smoking is probably one of the worst things you can do,” says Pascal Bordy, MD, general practitioner at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Florida. “It induces wrinkles, makes the person look more pale and creates vertical lines around the lips.” The toxins in cigarettes can also break down the elasticity of your skin, which leads to sagging. Are you ready to put down the pack yet?

Not Washing Your Face at Night

2. Not Washing Your Face at Night

Your skin needs to breathe and repair itself overnight, so it’s important to wash away the dirt and grime that accumulates throughout the day. Skimping on your nighttime routine – especially if you wear makeup – can lead to breakouts, irritation, a dull complexion and even eye infections and premature wrinkling. You only need 30 seconds of washing with a gentle cleanser to keep your skin healthy and vibrant, so make it a bedtime must.

Feeling Stressed

3. Feeling Stressed

“Nothing can make your body age faster than constant worry, anxiety and stress,” says Bordy. In fact, research suggests stress is linked with shortened telomeres, a chromosome component that’s associated with cellular aging. When a telomere has been depleted, the cell often dies, speeding up the aging process; some research has found that people with high work-related stress have the shortest telomeres. Plus, stress can increase blood pressure, age your brain and disrupt your sleep. Learn how to identify and manage your stressors, and practice deep breathing and meditation to diffuse their effects.

Cutting Out All Fats

4. Cutting Out All Fats

As delicious as bacon and butter are, it’s wise to limit saturated and trans fats – the fats that can up your risk of heart disease and stroke. Just don’t ditch heart-healthy unsaturated fats, too. Salmon, nuts, avocado and olive oil contain good fats like omega-3s and monounsaturated fat. These kinds of fats calm inflammation, lower the risk of heart attack and keep your hair, skin and joints healthy.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

5. Not Getting Enough Sleep

Checking items off your to-do list, rather than getting a good night’s sleep, is more harmful than you think. “More than one-third of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep per night,” according to Bordy. “When you get to sleep, the parasympathetic system takes over and allows the body to repair itself.” Sleep deprivation can lead to to high blood pressure, weight gain and diabetes – not to mention under-eye circles and a dull complexion. Aim for seven to nine hours every night.

Mahi magic: Dhoni’s ‘blind’ run-out to dismiss Ross Taylor is a delight to watch

On Wednesday, Dhoni’s role behind the stumps was put to test again and the 35-year-old gloveman passed with flying colours provind his mettle once again. (BCCI)

India’s limited-overs captain M S Dhoni is well-known for his skills behind the wicket. A simple YouTube search for ‘quickest stumping ever’ shows atleast twenty different videos which exhibits his magic with the glove.
On Wednesday, his role behind the stumps was put to test again and the 35-year-old gloveman passed with flying colours proving his mettle once again.
In the 46th over, Yadav was bowling to an out-of-form Ross Taylor, who was gearing up for the last-few-over-fireworks to take New Zealand to a decent total.
Taylor swung his bat and the ball raced towards fine leg. Dhawal Kulkarni put in a commendable dive and sent the ball back in a flash to Dhoni, who was still walking towards the wicket.
The ball landed awkwardly and Dhoni in one quick motion half-collected, half-deflected the ball onto the stumps without looking at the wickets.
Taylor who was attempting the second run had to take the long walk back.
Take a look at the magic moment here.
Although New Zealand went on to win the game, that didn't stop Twitterati from gushing about their hero's extraordinary fielding ability.

8 Secret techniques you can use to find your dream startup team

Starting a new enterprise with like-minded people who can walk with you through thick and thin is not always easy. If you consider your startup to be like a sports team, you will quickly realize that recruiting top talent is the key to winning. It’s often said, individuals don’t build great companies, and teams do. And as I am a big fan of Superheroes, I consider a startup team like the Avengers, a team of extraordinary Superheroes who are excellent individually but, if they have to change the world they need to partner together and take advantage of each other’s strengths.
The company with the best Superheroes will win. This will be the team which comprises of the most talented people, channel them in the most productive configuration and get the most output from their unique capabilities.
I have always been posed with questions such as how do you recruit? How did you find your co-founder? When I was starting GOQii, we were entering an unknown and unexplored sector of health, fitness and wearables, and there were no real ‘qualified’ people available. And I am not a big believer of conventional methods like LinkedIn, Consultants, Naukri, etc. especially to put together a top management team. However, over the last two years, I am proud to say that we have been able to put together an amazing team of such mavericks. I am sharing some of those methods!
Talk to strangers
Talking to strangers is an art. Seldom, you find someone interesting and end up conversing with that person. But, when you are an entrepreneur or planning to be one, then talking to strangers might just help you find someone interesting who might suit your company. I try and strike conversation with interesting people during my travels- at the airport or in a hotel lobby or in a restaurant. Sometimes these interactions have proved fruitful and at times have not worked. It’s during one such travels in 2013 that I met Luke Coutinho on an airplane. He was sitting next to me and my curious mind was telling I should get to know him. As I got talking to him I found that is an expert in health, nutrition and fitness. During our conversation I learnt and understood a lot at a time when I had nothing to do with the health sector. A year later the GOQii idea came and I immediately remembered him. Today, Luke Coutinho is the Master Coach at GOQii. He has been instrumental in guiding all the coaches on board and also in creating the coaching module. He encourages and helps people steer away from conventional medicine and uses natural foods. He believes lifestyle change helps and he coaches people to make shift in their lifestyle to achieve their health goals.
Give a real-world test
While skills are vital, a person’s attitude or mindset is more important for success. Somebody with the right attitude, according to me, is genuinely interested and can think ahead of the game, has lots of ideas, and is constantly seeking ways to improve things. I am flooded with resumes of people keen to work with me. To most, I say let’s meet at 6 am in the morning for a run on a Sunday and the obvious happens – most don’t turn up. But, one person did when I said let’s meet for a run at Juhu beach at 6am on Sunday. Krishna Kumar aka KK, who has a passion for brands, mountains and startups was there bang on time at 6 am. We ran for an hour and chatted over health, fitness etc. People with the right attitude can think ahead and take positive views of things and want to contribute. Add to that person’s experience also matters.  KK has immense experience in advertising and digital marketing. Apart from being an experienced advertising and media man, KK is also an avid mountaineer who has scaled 6000+ mountains. It’s his friendly attitude that he gets his way with people. At GOQii, KK is responsible for overall marketing strategy and consumer engagement.
Always be ready to help entrepreneurs
Being an entrepreneur myself, I have other budding entrepreneurs getting in touch with me for mentoring and guidance. You never know who would be helpful and when. I met Champ aka Chirag Alreja for the first time at a TIE event in 2012. Champ was running his own company then called ‘HitPlay’ and he would often get in touch with me for guidance. He was radical in his thoughts and meticulous in execution. He was a creative engineer who had been developing and delivering tech toys since many years. When the idea of GOQii came up, I knew Champ would be the right person with whom I could take this idea forward. He had a good understanding of customer requirements and could develop products at affordable prices. He understood hardware well and what works. I called Champ when he was on a vacation and asked him if he would be interested in starting a health tech venture along with me. He came on board as the COO and is totally the man behind the hardware that GOQii launched. He is also an avid Tennis player and believes in fitness.
Reward Loyalty, Integrity and Capability
Most senior people when they move from one organization to another they generally take their brigade from their previous organization with them. But, I did not believe in doing that after I moved out of Indiagames. I have always believed take only those who seem a right fit for what you are planning to do next. Sachin Janghel was one such guy from Indiagames I knew for a long time with experience in games and interactive application development on various mobile, online, social networking platform. When I decided on GOQii, Sachin was the go to man for all technology building. Hence, he is the only person I hired from Indiagames because I saw a perfect fit with what GOQii wanted to do. Sachin, is the CTO and the man responsible for all technology behind the GOQii Ecosystem.
Do good Karma
I have always believed that when you do good towards others it sooner or later pays you back well. In general, what goes around comes around. One such story is that of how I met and got on board Abhishek Sharma, Chief Marketing Officer at GOQii. The story dates back to 2012 London Olympics. I had two tickets for the Opening Ceremony and I wasn’t sure what I would do with one spare ticket that I had. I could have sold it, but instead I had other plans. On FB, I found a distant cousin Meghna who I hadn’t met in almost two decades and asked her if she would be interested in watching the game with me. She was delighted to come but during the event mentioned her husband is a big fan of basketball and so wished he could see the same. So later that week I did some juggling and got a ticket to the basketball game and met Abhishek to give him the ticket over coffee. During that meeting I learned, Abhishek is a fitness product expert with several years of experience with leading global brands such as Nike in India, US and UK, where he led diverse products. Also, he is a strong believer in the principle of sustainability and social development and has collaborated with various global non-profits organizations on key social projects. He was just the right person for a company like GOQii that was entering into health and fitness space. Moreover, thanks to his experience with NGOs we came up with the concept of karma points. At GOQii, Abhishek is in charge of all marketing and Karma initiatives.
Love thy Neighbour
CFO is of prime importance to any organisation. I knew Srini aka Srinivasan Sawamy as my neighbour and my building secretary for the longest time. We met during our society functions and society meetings. One day, I got talking to him and he consulted me regarding his finance startup. Srini was the numbers man armed with a CA degree and was launching a company that would outsource CFO functions to the SME sector. He had in-depth understanding of profitability and growth drivers and has extensively worked on financial planning and data analysis. When GOQii was in its launch phase, I contacted him and we talked business for a bit and about his next role. I asked him whether he would like to handle the finance operations of GOQii. He was the ideal man who had good control of the cash flow. I could not have found a better man than him to handle a startup like ours.
Interview those who interview you
Sometimes it helps to be good friends with a journalist. Anusha Subramanian is an award winning journalist and I have known for many years. We met professionally many a times and she has interviewed or quoted me in her stories related to technology, startups, gaming, etc. Over a period of time, I realised she is an avid outdoor sports enthusiast and learnt she is a trained mountaineer. When GOQii idea was being worked upon, I also wanted a repository of blogs to build a strong content base related to health, fitness and nutrition. Anusha had just quit her long stint in mainstream journalism and that is when I called and asked her what she thought of the idea of GOQii and would she be interested in writing and building the blog site. I saw a good connect with her skills for writing and additionally her interest in fitness and outdoor sports. Anusha is the Senior Content Editor at GOQii Blog and has built a large repository of content across the areas of health, fitness, nutrition, player stories and the list now includes medical blogs as well.
Be realistic and believe in the power of serendipity
Painting a rosy picture about your company just when you are starting off is a natural thing to do. One does that so that the company attracts the best of talent. But, I always thought otherwise and have always portrayed the real picture about our company. Window dressing your company can eventually prove disastrous. So when the time came to hire a people’s person (HR head), it set me thinking what do I say. The situation at GOQii was chaotic, so I posted on a social media site – looking for someone who can handle chaos. Suzaina Basheer replied back ‘I am the person who can handle chaos’. We met and she was totally a people’s person. I only told her ‘you need to put a method to all the madness here’.
Similarly, Connie D’souza who handles market research and consumer insights at GOQii came on board by chance. Her brother used to follow me on Twitter and I met him of all the places during the Amsterdam marathon. We got talking and I mentioned to him about GOQii. He heard me out and mentioned he has a sister who is into market research. I met Connie. She had limited experience and we were a startup so realised it’s a good fit as we could all walk the learning curve together. Connie came on board for a month as intern and her first task was to go on foot with a piece of paper and gather consumer insights, what they thought of the product etc. She came up with some interesting insights and thereafter she came on board as our lead researcher for delivering better consumer experience.
These are my superheroes who I have brought together. Their powers vary widely; but their ability to fly, enhanced capabilities and their projection of energy bolts are all common. Together we are working towards disruptive ideas to change the whole health and wellness game. Apart from these superheroes, I would like to point out how unconventional methods of hiring people sometimes just gets you the right mix of people across varied backgrounds. Many of my other hires at GOQii have also been in very unconventional ways. I have thrown challenges based on what they have said in their resume. If someone said they are a very good chess player, I have thrown a challenge of playing a game with the best chess player in office. Someone had said he does 50 pushups in 30 sec so made him do push-ups. The idea was to gauge the attitude and the diligence of a person during such processes.
